Erika K. Masaki, Ph.D.
The foundation of my teaching philosophy is that I aim to teach students how to think, not what to think. As an instructor of political science, my ultimate goal is to help students access the material using a variety of teaching approaches. In addition to lectures, I have included discussion boards, classroom simulations, and other tools to both engage and inspire my students. In addition to seeing my students succeed in the classroom, I am committed to helping them develop skills that will benefit them during their time in college and beyond. Having begun my teaching career at one of the most diverse institutions in the United States, and a designated Minority Serving Institution, I am keenly aware of the challenges and rewards of working with students from various backgrounds, including minorities, first-generation college students, returning military, rural, and non-traditional students.
